A Message from the Chairman:
The building that we now know as the Medical Arts Center has a long and rich history. It began as the Tolfree Memorial Hospital in 1929, named after local farmer, lumberman and banker John Tolfree. Throughout the years, several additions were added to the building in an effort to meet the community’s growing health-care needs. In 1983, the Medical Arts Center was created as an outpatient service to the hospital. But in 1991, the hospital’s board of trustees determined the building had reached its maximum capacity and they began planning to build a new facility.
The new medical center, located on south M-30, was opened in 1999 and is called the West Branch Regional Medical Center. Some of the medical center’s departments remain at the Medical Arts Center, including its laundry, materials management and billing office. With the bulk of its services relocated – and not wanting to simply abandon the old hospital – the WBRMC deeded the building and property to the Medical Arts Center. In 1999, the Medical Arts Center became a municipal Health Facility Corporation under state law and a subsidiary of the West Branch Regional Medical Center. The Medical Arts Center continues to maintain its own budget and board of trustees. Its mission: to provide outpatient health services to support the medical center while remaining a separate entity.
With the vision of making the Medical Arts Center a state-of-the-art outpatient medical facility, the center’s board of trustees secured the financing to renovate the building. Thanks to the foresight of the board and many community members, that dream has now been realized. I invite you to look into the services offered at the Medical Arts Center. I am confident you will be pleased you did.
Sincerely,
Chuck Converse,
Medical Arts Center Chairman
